If the economy improves and unemployment drops, Obama can take credit. If it fails to improve and unemployment rises, though, he can say he averted an even worse showing. Republicans will take the opposite tack -- attributing any improvement to the natural resilience of the economy and blaming the administration if things get worse. And neither side will really know who's right.

The arrogance that has surrounded either side in this debate is pretty staggering. Let's be honest with ourselves, people: we don't have a clue. I take that cluelessness to be a strong argument against government intrusions into things they know nothing about and for which the consequences are difficult to measure (and thus create accountability for)--but putting that aside we should at least be able to agree that what we know on these matters is very small next to the size and scope of our ignorance.

As someone who knows even less, I can agree to that. :)
